After this patch curl requires targeting Vista or newer, and a toolchain
with Vista support.
Supported MSVC compilers (VS2010+) all support Vista:
- VS2012+ target Win8 (or later) by default.
- VS2010 targets Win7 by default.
Supported mingw-w64 versions (v3+) all support Vista:
- mingw-w64 v9+ target Win10 by default.
- mingw-w64 v8 and older target Server 2003 (~XP) by default.
After this patch it may be necessary to override the default Windows
target version to Vista (or newer) via:
autotools: `CPPFLAGS=-D_WIN32_WINNT=0x0600`
cmake: `-DCURL_TARGET_WINDOWS_VERSION=0x0600`
- mingw-w64 v6+ allow changing the default at toolchain build-time.
Notes:
- For non-MSVC, non-mingw-w64 toolchains, `if_nametoindex` needs to be
allowlisted in `curl_setup.h`, if they do support it.

- assume `gssapi/gssapi.h` header for MIT Kerberos.
Drop logic detecting this header, and drop alternate logic including
a bare "gssapi.h". Bare `gssapi.h` is Heimdal-specific. MIT Kerberos
added support for it for Heimdal compatibility on 2006-11-09,
redirecting to `gssapi/gssapi.h`. MIT Kerberos supported the latter
header in the 1990s already.

The kerberos5 library Heimdal is one of three GSS libraries curl support.
It has a memory leak triggered by the new test in #18917 and the project
seems mostly abandoned.
Drop support and steer users to the MIT krb5 or GNU GSS libraries.

Released on 2016-Dec-19, it's the first "revamped" stable version, and
the earliest available as a source tarball at the official repository:

It's also the first version hosted by Homebrew. It builds fine locally
with curl, and also builds in CI with old linux: 7.1.0+dfsg-13+deb9u4.

libssh 0.9.0 was shipped on June 28 2019 and is the first version
featuring the knownhosts API
Drop libssh from the GHA/linux-old CI job since it gets a libssh 0.7.3
version, too old for us now.

It was wrongly bumped to 1.16.0 in db50fc6e95. While we strongly
recommend using 1.16.0 or later, we still allow builds using older
versions.
It would make sense to raise the requirement to at least 1.11.0 (Feb 19
2016) but that's not done right now.

Create ASCII version of manpage without nroff
- build src/tool_hugegelp.c from the ascii manpage
- move the the manpage and the ascii version build to docs/cmdline-opts
- remove all use of nroff from the build process
- should make the build entirely reproducible (by avoiding nroff)
- partly reverts 2620aa9 to build libcurl option man pages one by one
in cmake because the appveyor builds got all crazy until I did
The ASCII version of the manpage
- is built with gen.pl, just like the manpage is
- has a right-justified column making the appearance similar to the previous
version
- uses a 4-space indent per level (instead of the old version's 7)
- does not do hyphenation of words (which nroff does)
History
We first made the curl build use nroff for building the hugehelp file in
December 1998, for curl 5.2.

We remove support for building curl with gskit.
- This is a niche TLS library, only running on some IBM systems
- no regular curl contributors use this backend
- no CI builds use or verify this backend
- gskit, or the curl adaption for it, lacks many modern TLS features
making it an inferior solution
- build breakages in this code take weeks or more to get detected
- fixing gskit code is mostly done "flying blind"
This removal has been advertized in DEPRECATED in Jan 2, 2023 and it has
been mentioned on the curl-library mailing list.
It could be brought back, this is not a ban. Given proper effort and
will, gskit support is welcome back into the curl TLS backend family.

It's actually been this way since at least 2012 (when a 3-argument open
was added to runtests.pl). Given the lack of complaints in the interim,
it's safe to call this 23 year old perl version the minimum.
The explanatory parts are now in the everything curl book (which can
also use images etc). This document now refers to that resource and only
leaves listings of supported versions of libs, tools and operating

The tools.ietf.org domain has been deprecated a while now, with the
links being redirected to datatracker.ietf.org.
Rather than make people eat that redirect time, this change switches the
URL to a more canonical source.

This adds the I/O prefix to indicate that those "actions" are kind-of
related to those found in select(2) or poll(2) (reading/writing).
It also adds a note where the prototypes of those functions can be found
in the source code.

We currently use both spellings the british "behaviour" and the american
"behavior". However "behavior" is more used in the project so I think
it's worth dropping the british name.
